OUR Daily Features
The following items of interest are reprinted from the Bay of Plenty Times of fifty years ago. “A shock earthquake occurred about 6.30 this morning which had the effect of throwing one of the elevated tank stands at the Government buildings about six or eight inches out of plumb at the top and it has been considered advisable to have the water run off and the blocks seen to.*’ “A telegram from Wellington says that Mr Tregear, Inspector of Factories, is about to make a tour of inspection to enforce the provisions of the Factory Act. He also intends to insist on the immediate settlement of the half-holiday question.” ‘‘The Budget says:—‘The Minister of Justice is engaged upon a scheme for reducing the areas of resident magistrate’s circuits in the North Island, with the object of minimising the waste time in travelling, and of obtaining officers who will be able to undertake Native Land Court work.’ It is about time some of these areas were reduced in this district. Our worthy R.M. has an area nearly as big as the principality of Wales to administer justice in, at five or six different centres monthly, each from 20 to 40 miles apart. Such a post is no sinecure.”
