NEWS IN TOWN

Patriotic Shop The Patriotic Shop to-morrow will be in charge of supporters of the town candidate in the Maori Queen Carnival. Cakes, produce, needlework and flowers will be on sale.

Petrol For Launches

A limited amount of petrol will be made available in order to assist owners of private launches to maintain the engines in their craft in reasonable running condition, said the Minister of Supply and Munitions, the Hon, D. G. Sullivan. In spite of the shortage of petrol the War Cabinet had decided that supplies should be made available, if possible, to keep the craft mobile, and a small ration had been approved for this purpose. The small ration would only allow a very limited amount of running, but owners would accept the restrictions in the right spirit. E.P.S. Defaulters “Action is now being taken to secure compliance with the regulations,” said the Minister of Civil Defence, the Hon. D. Wilson, who expressed surprise and disappointment at the failure of numerous persons to fulfil their obligations to enrol in

the Emergency Precautions Service. The Minister said that several statements on this urgent matter had already been made, and warnings of penalties had been issued. As defaulters had had ample notice of their obligations, the authorities were determined to prosecute in cases of failure to enrol, whether the fault lay with the employers or the employees.
