SPRING BATTLE BEGINS
RUSSIANS STRIKE FIRST BLOWS FINNS OVERWHELMED IN THE NORTH IMPORTANT HEIGHT TAKEN NEAR LENINGRAD London, April 22 The war in Russia is now entering the eleventh month and the initial blows in the spring battle are being struck by the Red Army. On the Karelian Isthmus Russian forces have advanced six miles and have overwhelmed the Finns in three places. A message from Kuibyshev states that on the Leningrad front Soviet troops have recaptured an important height after a three-day battle. In spite of the fact that the hill was heavily mined and that enemy field guns dominated the slopes, the Russians swept on and drove the Germans from their positions. The Germans have lost 5,00 0 killed in a major counter-attack in the Kalinin sector.
German communiques speak of the impossibtili:y of fighting in the bottomless mire of the northern thaw, but claim the capture of several Russian positions in the Donets area.
