AT A STANDSTILL
OPERATIONS IN LIBYA BENGHASI AGAIN BATTERED FURTHER ATTACKS ON MALTA London. April 20 Land operations are. due to bad weather, still at a standstill in Libya, states a Cairo communique. Our bombers made a further attack on the much battered enemy supply base of Benghasi and our fighters were active over enemy territorv.
Three German Junkers dive bombers were shot down over Malta and three more Junkers and a Messerschmitt were probably destroyed. Malta's antiaircraft barrage, the most deadly in the world, lias been described by an officer who served there. He said that it was so intense that some of the enemy raiders would not face it. In an endeavour to avoid the barrage they flew low and the result of this was that they were riddled with machine gun bullets. Many of them who were not claimed as' destroyed would, in all probability, not
reach, their bases
i Our casualties were, he said, extraordinarily small.
Speaking of the civilian population, he said that they liked to stand outside and watch the raids. Whenever a raider was shot down a cheer went up like the cheering of a crowd at a football, match.
