A PAGE FROM THE PAST From the Bay of Plenty Times of January 17, IS9I, came the following:— "The Government feel annoyed at the spread of the rumour that they intended to employ a large number of females in the Post and Telegraph Departments. Both the PostmasterGeneral and the Secretary to the Department give to this rumour absolute denial. "A popular entertainment is to be held here on Thursday next, in aid of liquidating the debt on the-Mount wharf. A most interesting bill of fare has been provided, and the object is one that deserves support. "On December 2 9th last there was discharged from the Waikato Hospital one of the most interesting and successfully treated cases which has been yet brought in. On the 16th October, John Feilding of Tauranga-, was sent in from the Rukuhia estate, with lower jaw broken at both angles. A hole at each side of the back teeth had to be drilled to allow a wire to be put through to keep the broken bones in position, and the mouth permanently closed till a cure was made, another hole being made for a pipe, to allow discharge from the wound to pass away, and he was
fed with a springe. On Monday Feildiug left the hospital, with his jaw as perfect as ever it was. Curious to relate the accident occurred in the dinner hour of the very day on which his policy iriP the Accident Society expired, and as the expiry time is noon, the society refused to acknowledge any liability. This, to say the least, is cutting it rather fine.”
