BOROUGH CRUSHER

Question of Removal CRUSHING TO PROCEED. The question of removal of the borough crusher was again before the Borough Council at Wednesday night’s meeting. The question was introduced by Cr Whiling, Chairman of the Works Committee, who said he understood that the Tauranga Cooperative Dairy Association would withdraw their objection to the erection of the crusher in the vicinity of the land leased by the company on the waterfront near the military cemetery. On the motion of Cr Wallace, seconded by Cr lies, the report of Cr Whiting was received. Cr Newsham moved—That if the site for the crusher be fixed on the borough land near the military cemetery, also, that if extra land is required for the crusher negotiations be opened for leasing additional land from the Dairy Company. Cr Allely seconded. Cr Wallace thought the crusher should remain where it was. as that was tire best site for it. He moved an amendment-—That the matter be deferred.—Lapsed, on seconder. Cr lies thought the wisest course would be to ask tire engineer to report on the question of suitability of the site near the military cemetery. There was no definite decision that the Council would remove the crusher. He moved an amendment —That the engineer he asked to report on the suitability of the site. Cr Daines seconded. Cr Whiting approved of the amendment. Cr Allely thought the crusher should be shifted. Cr lies’ amendment was carried and was then put as the substantive motion and carried. Cr Scantlebury moved —That the engineer be empowered to go on with the crushing of metal on the present site. Cr Wallace seconded the motion, Crs Allely, Newsham and Whiting dissenting. Tenders For Punting Metal. Tenders for the transport of metal by punt from the Waimapu Quarry to the site of the present crusher and to Hairini Bridge were received as follows: Faulkner Bros, and Co. —To the present crusher, Is 9d per yard; to the Hairini Bridge, Is 7d per yard. W. Parris. —To the present crusher site or to Hairini Bridge. 2s 6d per yard. E. G. Williams.—To the present crusher site, Is 9d per yard; to Hairini bridge, Is 7d per yard. B. S. Brookes.-—To the ..present crusher site. Is 6d per yard; to Hairini bridge, Is 5d per yard. Cr Whiting moved —That the tender of Mr Brookes be accepted.— Seconded by Cr Allely and carried. were other dead trees that should be dealt with. Cr Allely pointed out that the Council required firewood for the tar spraying machine. The motion was carried. Frontage to Store. Cr Newsham stated that the frontage outside Mr Papps’ store on Cameron Road should be attended to, and moved—That the matter be referred to the engineer with power to act. —Seconded by Cr lies and carried. Stock Route. Cr Newsham said representations had been made that a fence that was erected on the stock route near the top of the Judea Cutting was a nuisance to drivers-of stock. He moved —That the matter be referred to the Engineer. The motion was seconded by Cr Law and carried. Electricity Committee. The Electricity Committee presented a report embodying the following recommendations: 1. Tauranga Harbour Board.—Application for light on Railway Bridge. Resolved that the Council agree to supply free current if the Harbour Board would install and maintain the light. 2. Tauranga Harbour Board. —Application for two lights on Town Wharf,—Resolved that the Council agree to supply free current if the Harbour Board would install and maintain the lights. 3. Commercial Heating.—Re proposal to reduce the charge for commercial heating to the same rate as for domestic heating.—Resolved that the Council make the reduction as proposed. 4. Prepayment Meters. —Resolved that one dozen prepayment meters he procured for use at discretion. 5., Soil Heating.—Resolved that charges for soil heating be allowed on the same basis as the “off peak” rates allowed to bake-houses. 6. Amalgamation Proposals Meeting with Power Board). —Your Committee is communicating with the Power Board to fix time, date and place for a Conference regarding amalgamation proposals. Clauses one and two were adopted. Clause three was adopted with the provisio that the reduction would not apply to commercial consumers under the maximum demand system. The clause regarding prepayment meters was explained by Mr Boak and was adopted. Clause five was adopted. Taxi Licenses. The Committee set up to look into the application of taxi drivers for a reduction in fees recommended that as it necessitates an alteration to .the by-laws and the licensing year had already partly expired that the Council is unable to make a reduction this year, and, further recommended that a Standing Committee be set up to revise!. and, if necessary, amend this and other by-laws. Cr Wallace moved —That the report be adopted.; —Seconded by Cr Larv and carried. Or Wallace moved —That a Standing Committee, comprising Messrs lies, Whiting. Daines, Allely and the mover, be set up to revise by-laws, if necessary.—Seconded by Cr Norris ami carried.
