£lo,ooo FOR MINERS

Arrears of unemployment benefit probably amounting to more than £IO,OOO are to be paid to 1,000 miners of Ellemore Colliery, Hetton, Co. Durham. This is the result of the failure of an appeal to the umpire by the chief insurance officer of the Ministry of Labour, arising out of a stoppage at the pit which began 14 weeks ago. The court of referees allowed the miners’ claim for benefit, but the chief insurance officer appealed on the grounds that it was a trade dispute because an offer to the men by the management was refused. The miners contended that the colliery closed because of trade depression, and that the offer was made only after they had received notice. There will be 13 weeks’ arrears to pay, and as many of the men have families the amount will reach almost £I,OOO a week.
