meeting of the Tauranga Land Settlement League was held in the Borough Council Chambers'on Sat- ■ rday'morning. Present; Messrs J. Bussell Wallace (Chairman), J. J Hamilton. H. Lewis, I. Stephens, ' c , Robbins. J. S. Thompson, F. ■W Ream and J- W. Smith (hon. secretary). apologies were received ifor the absence of Messrs A. 11. Beuham and G. F. Ciacken. Letters forwarded to Ministers of the Crown urging the settlement 0 f various blocks of idle lands were read It was slated that so far no replies hud been received. jlr Hamilton .stated that the sub-cornmitu-e intended inspecting the top end of the Omanawa Block area on Thursday next. The Chairman reported that the Chamber of Commerce, at its last meeting had adopted a motion urg•n<r the necessary authorisation of t he roads through the Whatakau Block. The following letter was read from Mr H. Lewis, county clerk: "Idle Lands. —In the matter of statements ma.de b5 r me at various meetings re the above, I have pleasure in handing you herewith a list of such lands aggregating 2109 ac res 3 roods 7 perches, which will, X estimate, be available for sale by auction practically to the highest bidder, within a month after the next meeting of my Council. The list comprises the following areas: one of i acre; one of la lr; one of 10a 15 p; ten of 50 acres; and one of 1487 a3r 19p. These areas for sale have the advantage of selection at the settlers’ own price and free from the essential Government restrictions on other lands. I am advising a list of enquirers and would suggest that you and the Secretary view these lands in order to place yourselves In a position to advise prospective settlers.” Properties in Tauranga County to be sold by auction under the provisions of the Rating Act, 1925: I—l 41 — 1 4 S 7 acres 3 roods 18 perches, being lot 5 on deposited plan 1408 S, portions of Kaimai No. 1 and 1A Blocks. 2, —l rood, being Lot 8 of subdivision of part Allotment 57, Parish of Te Mania, Town of Katikati. 3. —l acre 1 rood 6 perches, being Lot 61 of Allotment 57, Parish of Te Mania, Town of Katikati.

4. —50 acres, being Allotment 307, Parish of Te Papa. 5—50 acres, being Allotment 507, Parish of Te Papa. 6. acrbs, being Allotment 97, Parish of Apata. 7. —SO acres, being Allotment 98, Parish of Apata, Block VIII, Aongatete Survey District. 8. acres, being Allotment 96, Parish of Apata.

9. 50 acres, being Allotment 112, Parish of Apata. 10. 50 acres, being Allotment 105, Parish of Apata. 11. —SO acres, being Allotment 88, Parish of Apata. 12—110 acres 1 rood 8 perches, being Sections 1,2, 3,4, 7 and part Section 5, Block I, Katikati. 13. —50 acres, being Section 32. Apata.

15.—10 acres 15 perches, being Section 40A, Block VIII, Katikati Survey District. Mr Lewis pointed out that the properties could only be purchased at auction under the Rating Act. There was no provision for private sales.

It was decided that a letter be sent'to Mr Bryant, of Hamilton, asking for co-operation in applying his scheme for the settlement of idle lands which are about to be disposed of under the Rating Act. In,ireply to a question, Mr Lewis said many of the sections enumerated in his list were in the vicinity of settled farm lands.

Mr Thompson said the action taken by Mr Lewis was very practical and was to be commended, He moved—That Mr Lewis be thanked for his letter and the particulars given regarding the various blocks. The motion was seconded by Mr Stephens and carried unanimously. Mr Lewis stated that he had received inquiries from many people who were in search of land. ‘ Mr Hamilton stated there was a block of land at Oropi, owned by Mr Grace, of Wellington, which would be a suitable area for settlement under the Bryant Scheme. Other blocks in that district could also be secured. Mr Keam said there were two blocks at Welcome Bay, which were suitable for subdivision. Mr Lewis pointed out there was a large area in the Waitaha Block that was available. Mr Thompson directed attention to an undeveloped block of two thousand acres between McFadgen’s ood Omanawa. It was unanimously decided to communicate with the promoters of the Bryant Scheme pointing out that tarious blocks in the Oropi, Welcome Bay and Waitaha districts *ere suitable for settlement under ibeir scheme. '“Mr Stephens said he had interviewed Rahiri, a chief at Wairoa, vt’bo was favourably impressed with Ibe land settlement scheme.
