FIVE SHOTS ENOUGH

Sydney, Sept. 9. Five shots were fired in Blenheimstreet, Enfield, last night by Constable Gardner, of Burwood, while he was chasing a man wanted on a charge of stealing. Yesterday, an estate agent at Enfield, while examining an empty house, saw a quantity of tobacco in one of the back rooms. He informed the Burwood Police, and Constable F. Lawrence, of Bankstown, and Constable Gardner, of Burwood, were detailed to watch the place. Lavence hid behind the door of the room in which the tobacco was found, and about 7.30 two men arrived. As one man commenced to pack the tobacco, he was seized by Constable Lavence and handcuffed. The noise of the scuffling startled his companion as he was entering the house, and he dashed down the street with Constable Gardner close behind. Pulled Him Up. Constable Gardner called on the fugitive to stop, but he took no notice, and the constable thereupon fired five shots from his revolver. The man submitted to arrest, saying: “I thought you might have had 10 shots in the gun, and that one of them might have hit me.” Both men were charged with breaking and entering the shop of Freeman and Freeman, in Punch-bowl-road, Punchbowl.
