AUSTRALIAN TRADE.
SLUMP IX EXPORTS. After what piay be described as an orgy of importing a downward turn has at last taken place in Australia. February returns complete eight months of the financial year, and they show a decrease in imports of merchandise of £533,619 compared with the same period in 1928-29. The slump in exports continues, the value of merchandise exported being down £31,944,893. Some relief to this position is shown by the exports of gold, which have increased over £14,000,000. Wool and wheat together account for more than £24.000,000 of the decline in exports. Wool alone is down £l7 800,000. Due to lower prices and’ smaller quantity sold, the value of wool exported is 46 per cent, lower than the value for eight months of 1928-29. Wheat, with a fall of £6,500,000, is more than 50 per cent, lower. Decreases in beef and mutton are partly offset by improvement in lamb. Other decreases occur in skins, scoured wool, tallow, coal and flour. Dried fruits make a belter showing. Depressed metal prices have affected zinc and tin, but lead and copper show some headway.
