A senior scholarship in history has been awarded by the sped il committee of the New Zealand University to Mr A. A. Smyth, elder son ot Rev. J. W. Smyth, of I aurrng.r. Mr A. rv. Smyth, who recently gained his 6. A. degree, is a member ot the leaching staff of the Grey Lynn school and for some time was a scholar of the Tauranga District High School. Mr Bernard Slulden, of Tauranga, has been re-appointed as a member of the South Auckland Land Board.
Mr A. F'. Funks, of Sydney, and formerly of Tauranga, arrived here this morning to spend a short holidav.
Passengers by the Rcmuera, which arrived last nighf, include Mr S. N. Zimin, a New Zealand Rhodes scholar, who has retired trom the Indian service on pension and intends to settle in New Zealand, also Mr E. D. 1 aylor. supervisor of the new musical branch of iheNtw Zealand Education Department. T he W hakatane H ohour B a ird has appointed Mr J. W. Stunner as delegate to the meeting of the Bay or Plenty Development League tube held at Rotorua tomorrow.
At the age of 68 years, the Rev. Robert Stewart Wright died at Wbangarri last week. The late Mr Wright was wc'l-known in connection with work for the London Missionary Society in Africa. For five years he held the charge of the Congregational Church at Maungaturoto He retired five years ago on account of failing health.
Mrs Norrnar, Day, belter known on the concert platform as Cora -Melvin, leaves by the Matangi tonight tar Auckland, where she is to appear at the forthcoming Bohemian Society's concert in the Auckland Town Hail.
