BOATING NOTES

By “Spinnaker.”

Last Thursday's racing w'as quite good, Cutty Sark in the second class being the fastest boat for the day, and registered a. Win with Silver Link second.

In the first class race Janet went well and scored ai win, jusitl saving the timei from Mavia Wailana withdrew, leaving the handicapped still guessing as to her performance. Matua was a. little late, but she could not have given the other boats their time and won.

On Saturday the second class boats got aw'ay fairly close together. The first mark was rounded in the following order: Ngaio, Charm, Lois, No Surrender-, Alice and Silver link On the run to the lee mark No Surrender passed Lois and Charm. Most of the boats jibed 1 and Loic carried away her peak lashing. Notwithstanding this she overtook the leading boat on the wind and wag going really; fast, till .near the wharf when more gaff lashings broke and she had to- lower away for repairs. The order round the wharf buoy was No Surrender, Charm, Alice, Silver Link and Ngaio, with Lois well astern. This order was* kept throughout the second round, No Surrender just finishing with a few seconds to spare from the two next boats. Regarding the jibe at the leeward mark, I would like to point, out to helmsmen that where a lee mark has to be turned, which entails a jibe, that it is best to jibe well before the mark is reached so that a good moment can be selected between squalls also, the mark may be then rounded more easily.
