PLAYING GROUNDS

AN IMPORTANT PROPOSAL

At the borough council meeting on Wednesday last an important proposal was made by Cr. Walk er for the acquisition of certain properties in the borough as recreation grounds — in addition to the proposal for the purchase of the Show grounds paddock. If the proposal, he said, were entertained by the Council, and later by the ratepayers, he would be pleased to give £loo towards providing pleasure conveniences for the children. The proposal is one which has previously been mentioned by Crs. Jones and Scantlebury, and has now been brought to a head by Cr. Walker. It was unanimously taken up by other Councillors, who .warmly appreciated Cr. Walker’s offer, and deputed the Mayor and Cr, Scantlebury to approach the various owners. One owner, we understand, on being approached named a certain sum, but on ascertaining later that the Council were the prospective purchasers, and that the primary object was to provide playing grounds for the children, he made such a reduction in the price, as to constitute a most munificent gift to the borough. If the negotiations are successful the proposal will no doubt be submitted to the ratepayers with the other loan proposals.
