CONFLAGRATION DESTROYS LARGE WOOL SCOURING WORKS AT WOOLSTON
Loss Eslimated At Considerable Sum
Christchurch, Sept 11,11.57 a .ra. Damage to the extent of £?o 000 was caused by a fire, which at an early hour this morning consumed the wool scouring works of Walter Hill, at Woolston. Valuable scouring tanning, and fellmongery machinery' which cannot be replaced within eighteen months, was destroyed. The loss includes five hundred bales of wool, valued at £20 per bale.
The outbuildings were saved, but the principal works were practically burnt to the ground. Some seventy men will be thrown out of work. Christchurch Sept 11,12.35 p.m. The plant, buildings, and stock were insured in the Commercial Union Insurance Company for £9,770, covering about half Hill's losses. In addition some =£30,000 worth of Government stock was in the store, the insurance on which is not available.
