In Canterbury Snowstorm

Details concerning the losses of stool: iv the recent snowstorm are becoming available gradually as communication improves. Mr F Mackenzie, inspector of stock in Christchurcli, has returned to Christchurch, after au official visit to Oxford. He reports that the condition there continues to be very sernus. Larga numbers of sheep are snowed iv, and, as there is no country clear of snow, there is no place to take the shetp, even if they are rescued from the cbep snow. A farmer told Mr 'Mackenzie than'he lnd GOO hoggets ia the enow, and would bo very thankful if 300 were save 1. Another farmer had had 2,700 sheep iv the country behind Oxford and had saved about I,SOO The deaths arc increasing daily, even amongst hand fed sheep, because they have become weaker, and aro unable to climb out of placas that would have offered littlo difficulty a few dsys ago. It is stated ihat the loss of sheep on Mr A W Rutherford's Mrndip Hills station has been wry heavy.
