Mr Surtees is an old seller having a,ri^d in 1878. unJ a ox ut member of the Koad Iloanl , iuus to hi, M.Hto the Home ,ou«iry. His property■ is one oi lht . S how farms in Katikali. Hi _is member of t-ho Farmers" I mon and a large supplier to our dm. iactory. It is, therefore, a case m two very good men succeeding tuo \cry good men. The adjourned meeting ot the Ka likati Koad Hoard was held on unla\. In the inward corn-spun t^nco ~hing lo Mr Ceo. MclJlashan saP- ,, cation, it was resolved, on th. notion oi Mr Andrews, to supplement the County Council subsidy of r lo to his road by a similar amount to be paid out of the final instalment of timber halves when re-c-eivKl from the Department ot Lands. m reply to a letter from the valuation Department, on Iht-.motion ol Mi Taylor, Mr John Wilson was nominated as assessor for this district in the Assessment Court. \ letter was received from the 1 abour Department substituting Thursday for Wednesday as the statutory half holiday, sen, in reply to a second application, a previous one having intimated the change could not be- made. \ letter from the Tauranga lor. ,->ugh Council, offering the grader at 10s per day, was entered as received, and the following resolution on the motion of Mr Taylor, w-as adopted, That the clerk be insirucied to make arrangements L>v acquiring the free loan of the County Council's oW grader as kindly promised by the Council as soon as some necessary repairs are complied ; this Hoard undertakes to iviurn it in the same order and um-iuion when requested, and that tho yv«r--seer be instructed to make arrange. .nents forthwith for completing twisting- contracts connected therewith. Jn connection with this matter th* chairman stated that as the grader was not required at present .by the Borough Council to expected that it would have been offered free of charge Still, i' tfoe charge had been limited to the "working" days.there might have 'been some evidence of cominonsense in the oiler, but on reference to the report in the Hay oi Plenty Times the motion? was moved and seconded by two cf the old identities of Tauranga, whose local political creed might be expressed in the words of our church, "As it \va»" in the beginning-, is now, and ever shall be." Though speaking a.one of the Tauranga burgesses he should be very sorry to include all the old identities in this category, and he coincided with thd .\ie\vs " o. .mose tvho adopted the policy contained in the expressive but laconic telegram discovered in the late Paul Kruger's papers : "Festina lente' bent to him by the Cape Dutch Premier previous to the Boer war.
A long, but practical and friendly discussion followed on the proposed Taurartga Harbor .Hoard Bill, when the following resolution, on the motion of Mr Hoeing, was unanimous Jy adopted, That the draft of the petition to Parliament as read >b\ tho chairman be approved, that i necessary it bo type written and presented to .Parliament by Mr Hugi Poland, M.P., representing this portion of the Hiding electorate. Thy petition gave the reasons for exempting the Katikati 'Hiding- /i'om the -taxation area of the measure, setting forth, among others, that the outlay was chiefly intended to improve the harbor between tht Mount'and township, ami the terminus of the East Coast railway having been located at the Mount, the Government wharf would intercept all imports and exports, to and from country districts, reserving, a* the chairman remarked, the lles-h for the Government and the bone for tho proposed Harbor Board. How. ever, 'the local Government Bill, i) enacted, would probably settle thi*crude proposal prepared without the assistance of any reliable experts ij> such matters.
Sitting as the Executive of the Hallway League, a letter was received 'from-Hew W. L. Salter, resigning his position of hon. secretary and Treasurer, as he had sjld his property and was leaving the district. All ■ the members expressed their deep regret at the loss of his services, which he undertook at a lime, as stated by the chairman, when the one horse show, termed the Federated Bay of Plenty Kailway League, with its 'Mown the Coast policy" was proposed, but scouted by the Te Puke, Katikati, and AVaihi Railway Leagues. On the motion ot y,r Jineing, th< following resolution was unanimously adopted—That the re:-u;>nat U>n 1»\ Key. \V. L. Salter of his'position as hon. secretary and treasurer tc the Katikati Railway League be accepted with extreme re.cret.. This Board further desires to place on record its highest appreciation of t-ht valuable services he has rendered, not only to the Railway Leagne. out tc the Road Hoard's interest.l during- his tenure of oflice, and to wish him, Mrs Salter and family, every prosperity and happiness " in whatever district ho may finally decide to take up his t;uarlers.
