PROPOSED HARBOR BOARD.

DISCUSSION BY COUNTY COUNCIL.

At yesterday's meeting of the Tauranga County Council a communication was read from Mr D.B. Day, hon. secretary to the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce, enclosing several copies of the proposed Harbor, Board Bill, as drafted by a committee set up for the purpose by the executive of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce. Mr Day said: "This committee met. your representative, Mr Southey. in conjunction with Mr Munro. representing the Borough Council, and he will be able to explain to your Council the desires and objects of my executive in connection with the proposed Bill."

Cr. Gray suggested that the promoters of the Bill be asked to defer action until the Local Government Bill has been dealt with. If the latter Bill were passed the Provincial Council would assume control of the harbor.

Cr. Stewart said the ratepayers of Katikati were against the Bill, and were going to petition Parliament asking to be excluded from the rating area. The railway was authorised to Katikati and would serve its requirements.

Cr. Spence.said things were moving towards a Harbor Board. Messrs Sanford, Ltd.. intended to erect freezing works and wished the settlers to join. A Harbor Board would be essential if freezing works, were built. The Chairman was in favor of proceeding with the Bill. The Local Government Bill might not be passed for two years, and he did not believe in leaving harbor matters to stagnate. Cr. Soutbey spoke in support of the Bill.

Cr. Gray proposed: That in view of the Local Government Bill it is advisable to wait and see. what i^ done.

Cr. Stewart seconded and again spoke against the Bill

Cr. Spence moved: That the matter be postponed for a month.—Seconded by the chairman. . Cr. Gray withdrew his motion, and Cr. Spence's resolution was put and carried.
