A graceful tribute to the memory of the late Hon. W. Kelly was paid in the House of Representatives on Thursday night by Mr Herries, the present member >for the district formerly, represented in the House by the.' deceased gentleman. The late Mr Kelly, said Mr Herries, came to the Bay of Plenty in the early <iays, when settlers were sparse and the natives hostile. He had fought for the colony, and was one of the finest types of those pioneer settlers who had laid the foundation of the colony on a broad ami lasting basis. From almost the earliest times the naiiie of William Kelly was almost an institution in the Bay of l'lenty. Mi; Herries also spoke of the perils experienced 'by "representatives of the Bay of Plenty and East Coast districts in attending to their duties in the early days, when a man had to take his life in his hamls in traversing the country. "I am quite certain," added Mr Herries, "that the memory of William Kelly will long be held in the highest reverence by the residents of the Bay of Plenty. He was a kindly man, a good father, ami. -an excellent citizen. He has passed to his rest, but I hope that the young people of New Zealand will produce, year after year,' many William Kcllys, and thus follow in the footsteps of those fine types of the old people of the colony, who are now so fast passing away."
