The Cretan question
London, March B,—The Daily News states that the reply of Greece to the Powers is of s*ch a nature that it leaves the way open to renewed parleying.
Greece requires an assurance that complete autonomy will be granted Crete and objects to withdraw her forces before the Turkish forces evacuate it.
From Constantinople it is reported that the Greek Embassy has made an offer to the Porte to the effect that Greece will withdraw her forces from Macedonia of .Turkey will follow by withthe Turkish forces from that ravines; Reports from Athens state that a band of Macedonians captured a Turkish position near Grel vena.
Several Radidal members have addressed large gatherings in Hyde Park as a-- protest against the coercion of Greece by the
Powers.
London, March 9.—-The Powers in a, note to Greece" state that their decision in regard to Crete is irrevocable and they will not shrink from any measure of compulsion if the Greek warships are hot recalled within six days. To this Greece replied that the recalling of her troops prior to those of Turkey would endanger the safety of the Christians and that the proposed scheme of autonomy would prove a failure. She, emphasied her demand for union with Crete on historio rights and a common religion. She would be willing to withdraw her fleet if her troops were permitted to unite with the forces of the Powers in the work of. restoring order.
The Times states the reply will not modify the judgment of tbe Powers.
Admiral Canivado in command of the combined fleets has notified the Greek vice-consul that it is necessary for him to leave Crete.
The Admirals of the various fleets Jhave asked the Powers to send immediately six hundred men to maintain order in the large towns. Reports from Canea state that, the Moslems at Candano have now moved to a place beyond danger. Athens, M&rch: 8. —The Porte has accepted the proposal of the Powers to granting autonomy to Crete but has reserved the settlement of details, concerning the carrying-out of the proposaL •■ , The Cretan .insurgents attempted to blow up a blockhouse at Kalatide; the explosion made breaches in the walls and killed fourmen.
It is understood that in reply to the demands of the Powers Greece refuses to withraw her forces from Crete.
The Athens correspondent of the Times suggests that Prince George of Greece be made head of the Government; this would satisfy Greece and the Cretans. Wreok and great loss of life. London, March B.—The German steamer, Seracroa, has,been wrecked on the coast of Cornwall and forty people drowned. The tieayy seas prevjented. the lifeboat reaching the wreck. Colliery accident' London, March colliery at Dover, (Durham '?) has been flooded and : eight miners drowned. Female franchise. London, March 9.—The House of Lords has rejected the Woman's Franchise Bill without going to a division. Wreck of a gunboat. Constantinople, March B.— A Turkish gunboat has been wrecked on tho coast of Epirus. A huge granary burnt. New York, March 8. —A fire destroyed a large grain elevator in Illinois and nine hundred thousand bushels of wheat were consumed. Butler's extradition granted. Wasiitngtox, March 9.-r*Mr Sherman, Secretary of State, has granted the extradition of Butler.
