PECULIAR FREAKS OF LIGHTNING.
Particulars of the thunderstorm- at Hawera which killed three horse* show that the animals were killed within a few feet of each other, about 150 yards from the front door of a house. One of the horses belonged to Mr R. Robertson, one to Mr S. Dudley and a foal to Mr C Wallis. The horses were singed on the manes and scored along the backs and sides and down the legs, showing the track of tbe lightning on its course to earth. The ground, for some three feet round the dead animals, was found to be torn up into r,ig-zig trenches about two inches deep by five feet in length. Close to each horse was a boie; in one case two inches wide and three feet deep, the other two being one fo t in depth, each being connected with tbe surface trenches. On Sunday large numbers of people visited the place, and were much interested in tracing the path of the electric fluid from its contact with the horses to its final distribution in the earth
