London, Feb. 23. — Under cross* ; examination by Mr Russell, Pigott pleaded the inviolability of the confessional with regard to an admission he made to Archbishop Walsh, and refused to divulge what passed between them. ; . The Witness staggered. > ; The witness was staggered by Mr Russell producing an admittedly authentic letter from Pigott, informing Archbishop Walsh that an attempt would be mad\ to wreck *the Irish party upon evidence quite sufficient for an English jury. He would defeat this and prove their innocence, on condition that tbe Archbishop guaranteed secrecy. The witness admitted sending subsequent letters assuring Archbishop Walsh thai; he bad not assisted in the attempt to prejudice the Parnellites. He had received a letter in reply, refusing to interfere.
