OPOTIKI.
(l-ROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.). Since the holidays I have had nothing of importance to chronicle, indeed nothing has happened worth writing about except the Tauranga-Opotiki cricket match which was so ably reported by your special, I learn that the Opotiki Club are trying to raise a team to visit Mercury Bay and Tauranga I hope they will be successful as I think these matches are really productive of good feeling between the small districts. B.s. Chelmsford. A great deal of absurd fuss was made about the Chelmsford getting on the bar on Tuesday lact. As far as I can learn there was no further damage done than the breaking of the waste pipe, in my opinion it shows a great want of judgement to make any statements about the damage done to a passenger vessel until you are quite sure that your information is correct as it may possibly intimidate would be passengers. _ , v 98 , Douglas —The s.s. Douglas has paid a visit to the dock and has returned, I am informed with one knot an hour added to her speed and rumour hath it that the Northern Company are intending puttmg a new vessel uDon the Opotiki- Auckland trade? why did they not do this four years ago if they had I do not think the Chelmsford would have beon trad■"ffiK child of Mrs Jones whose husband is employed as fire, man on the 8.8. Cbelmsford was nearly drowned by falling into the river about 300 yards from Mr E. King's residence yesterday. A little companion gave the alarm at the house and Mr King ran instantly to the spot and diving into the water fortunately succeeded in grasping the child at once and brought it ashore, to all appearances lifeless; alter about two hours had been spent trying all means to induce respiration the workers were rewarded by a tew feeble gaaps ; and animation was shortly fully restored and the child is now doing well. The parents musM am sure, feel very grateful to Mr King and Mrs Clarke for their prompt and efficacious assistance. Our Town Board have invested in a. water rcart of the latest approved pattern much to the indignation ot some" of our local croakers. Inspector Goodall paid a visit to Opotiki this week the result of which I am informed is the removal of Constabtei -/MacCabe from the district Mac has been here nearly nine years and I do not think there is a mau in the place glad of his removal and I wish him good luck where ever he may go. As to the wisdom of «>moy. ing police at short intervals I think it is very necessary especially in small communities like Opotiki there is no better exemplification of the adage "familiarity breeds contempt than the result of friendly relations between police and civilians. . Thursday half holiday.-Our business people have all deemed to have a half holiday every Thursday afternoon this is a great bppn to the employees. Feb. 12th 1887.
