OBITUARY.

MR JOHN LOW.

Anothor of the 'district's, old idon- | tities in the person of Mr John Low, saddler, Balclutlia, has passed away, the death occurring at his residence, Clyde Street, on Saturday. The deceased gentleman had been in failing health for some time', and the end was liot unexpected. The late IMr John Low was born at 'West Linton, Scotland, on April 15, 1545. He 'was educated in his native town, and later, in company with his parents and other mem'bors of the family (seven sons and two daughters), ca'me to the colony in the'ship 'Nelsonarriving at Port 'Chalmers in the year I'M2. The deceased gentlcni'an remained at Dune din for a ti'me, his father setting up a business in conjunction with . his son, under the style of Low and Son. Th'is firm was the winner of tho first certificate donated by the 'Dunedin exhibition in 1.1865 for cart harness. Messrs Low and Son later commenced in business at Lawrence and 'Balclutlia, the late IMr John Low managing tho latter shop. This was in 11863 or thereabouts, 'and the deceased subsequently acquired his father's interest in the shop in '1879. It is a, notable fact that all deceased's 'brother's were saddlers. In 1879 the late 'Mr 'Low was married to Miss Ay'son, third daughter of the late !Mr 'Peter Ayson; of Warepa, a member of one of the first families to settle in the Clutha district. They were married at .Dunedin 'by the late Dr Stuart. Mr Low was a prominent 'Oddfellow when this lodge 'was in its infancy, a member' of the Masonic Lodge, and a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church. He filled the office of borough councillor for a term a'bout the year 1875. His hobby was his garden, and he 'displayed great interest in the growth of Ids plants right till his latter days. Of his brothers three are still alive, these being 'Messrs Allan ('G-len-avy), George (Gore) and 'Peter (Dunedin). Two sisters—(Mrs Wilson and Mrs McDonald (Gore) —survive him, a'lso a 'wife and falmily of eight—Mr George 'Low (Invercargill), Mrs 'Wrightson (Lowburn Perry), Mr Marcus Low ('Balclutlia), IMrs G.'ll. Henderson (Balclutlia), Mrs 'R. W. 'Hamilton (Gore), Private Peter Low (on active service in [Franco), and Miss Annie and' Master Orm'ond (Balclutlia).
