WEALTHY MRS GREEN.
Legal proceedings to have the late Mrs Hetty Green, conspicuous and unique figure in American finance, and known as the wealthiest woman in the world, declared to have been a legal resident of Wew "York State, have been taken. The proceeding is the fii-st step in the final eifort of the State of JNew lork to collect an inheritance tax on the vast estate, estimated unofficially as being worth between 100,000,000 dollars and 150,000,000 dollars (£2O, 000,000 or £30,000,01)0), which was left by Mrs Green. The State's contention is that the estate is liable to taxation in iSew York, in place of, or as well as, in Vermont, which Mrs Green and her heirs declare was her place of legal residence. Here are the reasons ascribed under oath by Colonel E. HT B. Green, son of Mrs Hetty Green, for his mother's odd places of residences, and her constant eifort to hide her identity by assuming as hers the name of a pet dog, who was her invariable companion in Doarding-houses where she stayed: "The newspaper reporters and the 'cranks' U6ed to get after her, and the charity people would, get after her, and she would move—she kept moving around. Every place she went she had a different name. Her favorite name war 'Dewey.' She had a little dog by that name, and bo she put the uog's name on."
