Social at Milburn.
(From Our Own Correspondent). A sooial in honor of Privates D. Marshall, D Eaitt, J, Struthers, and M, Dale, who are down on final leave, waa held in the Milbum Sohool last Monday evening. Owing to the uncertainty of the granting of the extra five days' leave the social was very hurriedly ..arranged, but neverthe'ess jit was a very successful function, being generally voted one of the best we have had. Mr W. Grey, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, presided, and |the building was crowded to overflowing, nearly every house in the district heiog represented, and there waa a goodly number from Circle Hill. After a verse of the National Anthem the Chairman expressed his pleasure at seeing such a large attendance. They had met to do honor to four more local young men, who were going out to fight for King, Country, and Bight, As a boy he had known Private Baitt's grand" father, who conducted the first Sunday School in the district. He had also known Private Dale's grandfather, who was also a man of sterling character, Privates Marshall and Struthers had not been bo long in the distriot, but the speaker balieved they would, with their mates, do their duty, (\pplause). Mr John Somerville, in expressing his ijood wishes to the departing aildiers, referred to Private Marsh ill's po.vees on the traction engine, and gave an in stance of how he mid at one time saved the whole threßi iog plant frcm'going wheels over funnel down a steep bill into a creek. Seeing thafc ha was auch a'good hand with the engine he tbojghb that be sbould be given chargj if one of ha tanks. (Laughter ana applause), Mr Cawley also appropriately addressed the soldiers, and gvve thorn some earnest words of a'lvioa. On bg« half of the Patriotic Committee h presented Privates Baitt and Marshal! with wristlet watohes, and Privates Stru hers and Dale with safety razors. Mr W. T. Brabyn also spoke on be* half of the Milbura Church Session, <vid presented each soldier with a khaki New Testament.
After the singing of " They ar. jolly good fellows, 1 ' and cheers, each of the recipients returned thanks in brief manly speeches. Refreshments were then banded round and greatly appreciate'.!. During the evening a variety of musi c*' and elocutionary items were we'l receivedi Miss M, Williamson opaned with an inspiring pianoforte solo, and was followed by Mrs Somerville, who gave a good rendering of the old favorite '■ Needles and pins," A duet, !l Money matters," by Miss Alexander and Mr W, Brabyn, was heartily encored, and Mr W. J. Lawrence was loudly applauded for his song, •• Dolly Gray." IVm Wilcox sang very Bweetly " She is far from the land," and pianoforte solos were sweetly played by Miss Frances Leslie and Miss Ghdys Lawrence. Mies Hamilton was vigorouJy encored for her recitation, " The fireman's wedding," and later on gave a dramatic rendering of '' Casabianoa," Ab the billy w.e nrfc quito boiling, Mr Br-ibyn Bang a few \ erse* of " Rule Britannia," the audience joining in the chorus lustily. The accompani men's during the evening were played by Miss Brabyn and Miss Lawrence.
