Toko. High School.

Following is a copy of the annual report and balance-sheet, to be submitted at the householders meeting in connection with election of Toko High School, committee:— Your committee, in submitting their annual report have to state that twelve meetings have been held during the year, at which the attendance has been very good. Staff—The present staff is as followsßector, Mr W B Graham; mistress, Miss .T R Nelson; assistants —Miss Manson, Miss Lirtlejohn; 1 pupil teachers—Miss Lily Robertson and MissM Athy; secondary assistant, Mr A J Ferguson, M.A. Miss Watt, one of the 'secondary assistants lias just left the school. Owing to Mr Searles illness the position of first assistant has i>3en filled by various rolieving teachers, Mr Thomson being now in the position. Attendance—The attendance in the primary department is steadily increasing. The attendance in the secondary department fell at the beginning of the year, but shows sigus of again improving. 2 Secondary Department—This branch of the work, continues to reflect credit upon teachers and pupils, as tne work turned ouc at the school is of a vory high order indeed. Classes have been conducted, in cookery, teacher, Miss Melville; dressmaking, Miss Burgess; advanced needlework and painting, Miss J R Nelson; rural science, Mr Green; carpentry, Mr P Jackson. An up-to-date kitchen tilled with two ranges of the latest pattern in the lower part of the new building is provided for the cookery class, which also serves for the painting class on account of the good light obtained, while the upstairs part is fully equipped for the science couise. Two improved-'Singer drophead sewing machines are in use for the dressmaking and needlework classes. During the year a circular saw bench, with saw attachment, and a wood turning lathe were installed in the carpentry room for the use of the pupils. Thanks—The committee beg to tender their thanks to the Technical Classes Association for their share in providing same, the Iflilf cost being borne by the Education Board. The committee also desire to express their thanks to donors of medals and all those who contributed* to the prize fund.

School Garden— The pupils ( have received instruction'regttlarly throughout the year and take keen interest in their work. During the year a handsome greenhouse was erected in part of the scoool garden, the concrete foundation, framework and glazing being the work of the advanced pupils ot tlio carpentry class under guidance of their instructor, and will prove a valuable adjunct to this branch of school work. Annual Inspection inspectors Richardson and Robertson conducted the annual inspection of the school. The report, although not published as formerly, was a splendid one, and the teachers aro again to be congratulated on tne efficiency of the sohool. . Examinations—At the various public examinations the pupils acquitted themselves well. Three passed the matriculation examination, one secured a partial pass, while six passed the Public Entrance or Senior Free PlacaExam. One pupil secured a partial D certificate. Airini SomerviJle was dux of the school for 19J8, recoiviug the gold medal donated by Mrs E Stewart, and several pupils gained Navy League prizes for eliootnig. Technical Instruction—Very successful evening classes were held during last winter under the control of a beard of management. The use of the class rooms and the new technical buildiugs were granted for these classes, The committee earnestly trust that these classes will be well supported during the coming session. Improvements—During the year improvements to the extent of £'i'6 15s Gd were spent on the buildings and grounds, and £lB l(3s 6d on furniture; total £42 12s. The various buildings are in good repair. The stone work of the main buldiug is being pointed •by the Board's workmen. A collection of native shrubs was received from the Forestry Department and have beon planted at the school entrance. Break-up—The break-up took place in the school, but owing to the inclement weather there was a poor attendance ot' parents and pupils. Finance—The total receipts from all sourcos, including balance of £62 17s 3d carried forward from iast year, amounted 10 £IG2 Os lid. The expenditure totalled £122 12s 7d, thus reducing the balance to crodit of incoming committee to £39 8s 4d. This reduction is principally due to the increased expenditnre 011 improvements effected to the sohool grounds, whilst a further instalment was paid to the Board on the committee's proportionate cost of the septic tank installation.
