Country School Committees Conference.
The Rev, P. Ji, Fraser has issued I he following circular So the chaitman and members of Otago Country School Comrnitiees:
Gentlemen, —I have to inform you that the annual meeting or conference of the Otago Country School Committees Association will he he'd at the Education office, Jetty street, Dunedin, on Wednesday, June ist, at 2.30 p.m. A cordial invitation to attend this meeting is extended to all members of country school committees throughout O'ago who may be visiting Dunedin during Show week. I shall be very pleased if members of country school committees forward to me before that date, a note of any subjects they desire to have discussed. I would attain call special attention to the matter of the examination and inspection of the smaller country schools, and urge that a strong expression of opinion be made on this important subject. I have frequently expressed the opinion that the new system of throwing practically the whole responsibility for the passing and promotion of pupils on teachers of the smaller schools is harmful to the best interests of education. The examination of country pupils at centres rather than at their own school is also a disadvantage to a large number of country children. The, question of conveyance of children of outlying places to school also requires further ventilation. There are other subjects, doubtless, in the minds of committeemen, and I trust you will attend in large numbers this our annual Conference, as it affords almost the only opportunity for country school committees of voicing their opinions in common.
