Kaitangata News Items.

(From tho (Jlutha Loader). Mr .J. P. Malcolm, who lias been recommended for tho position of head master of the Knitangata School, has had charge of the IS'aseby School for the last J8 years. During that time says a correspondent, Mr Malcolm has proved himself a. most capable master i and a popular citizen, and his depar-' turo from Naseby will be keenly, felt. Mr Moir, of Kaitangata, who has been appointed headmaster of the Mosgiel District Il'gh School, is to bo entertained at a social next Thursday evening. As everyone knows, the Kaitangat a post ollice is an old and rickety building, standing high on a basin-shaped site that collects all tho Water from the surrounding sections. The department purchased a new site some , time ago, but there wag evidently 1 little prospect of a new building being erected without undue delay; and it was reported that the Postal Authorii ties were going to spend some money j iii repairs to the present building. The ( unnecessary wasto of money this would entail in unsuitable quarters, sooner or later to be abandoned, was pointed out by the Mayor, and, i\b a re-

suit, wo understand the Public Works Department have been instructed to prepare plans and specifications lor the new building. This is in terms of a promise made iby the PostmasterGeneral some time ago that the building would go on in the very near future. It would appear the local Advisory Board or medical oflicer have very little control in the Kaitangata _ Cottago Hospital so far as the admission of fover patients is concerned. Hence some local dissatisfaction. A case in point: The Mayor communicated with the secretary of r tho Board in Dunedin (Mr T. S. Graham) only to find that that gentleman could do nothing without authority from Dr Ogston. This was communicated to Dr Fitzgerald, local medical officer, who communicated with Dr Ogston, with the result that after all this round about work the patient, a diphtheria case, was admitted into the fever ward. With so much circumlocution it is little wonder dissatisfaction oxists. After the expiry of licence in Bruce on Wednesday next, the Bridgo Hotel at Kaitangata will bo conducted by Mr H. Clements as an accommodation and private boarding-house. Wo are sure that under Mr Clements the loss of the hotel license will not detract from the comfort of the Bridge as a well-managed houso for the travelling public. At tho conclusion of the Borough Council meeting at Kaitangata on Wednesday night, the Mayor intimated that he had been informed by the mine manager (Mr W. Carson) that tho privilege of discharging trucks on tho streets would be continued to tho council the same as hitherto. Mr Henry Neamc, who has been associated with Mr Chas. Burrell in the management of the Club Hotel at Kaitangata for some time past, will tako over tho houso after tho licenses expire on Wednesday next, and conduct it as an accommodation houso. Those who know Mr Neanie, will feel quite suro ho will make a success of his venture.
