Arrangeirients have - been made, with the Railway Department to run the special train to- the terminus of the. Catlins River branch,- to enable visitors to have a glance at that -famed . : spbty so prominent . in Otago history, and to return inraiediately to. the sceneof the sports at "Owaka. OFhe thanks* of the committee are due to Mr Richardson, secretary Owaka Caledonian Society, who has not only granted the use 'of the spbrtsground, but has proffered ■ every assistance possible. Arrangement's have; been • made with -the Kaitangata Brass Band, who; will accom,'pahy the party; A monster programme ' has-been;' proyided-f- the- .largest for : many years— -arid; substantial trophies, are to.be competed: for; ..Special races have . been . allotted for em ployes arid.; . business; people, -'and.', visitors, both male and female ; in addition, the committee ai-e providing a handsome silver,-cup; to' be competed for anriually in a tug-pf-war• between teams ; representing Taratu^,Castle Hill, Kaitangata. surface, and Kaitangata -. underground- employes^ The usual provision will be made for children in the shape of toys. A new sys- ' stem is to be tried this year in regard to'the giving out of toys to infants; the committee intend distributing the toys in the 'train bn>: the: homeward; journey^ and thereby hope- to give satisfaction to all. Given fine- weather, the gathering next -Saturday should -be a thorough success. It is pleasing to note the. boon which has been conferred on our locality by the addition of two well-known residents' names to the,list' of J.P.s: The want of a sufficiency' of J. P. ihour ■midst has been felt very much lately,. .as the two gentlemen who have done this duty so .Often have, been taxed very severely, and often at great incphyenience to themselves. The appointmehtsi will also be of. assistance to our genial constable, •as for some time past he has been put to great inconvenience to obtain a Bench, especially when urgency was required. I tender those gentlemen, my congratulations. 1 The annual picnic of the Wesleyan Methodist congregation was held in Mr A. Jarvie's paddock oil Saturday last, when there was a .good attendance. The intense heat was somewhat oppressive at times, but the usual games were indulged'ia to the enjoyment of all pre- ; sent. y ;'■ The- Clutha River 'Boajd steamer, Clyde, came up' to the jetty last week, and took a cargo of coal for the^backblocks.,
