"A FIG FOR THE MASTER."
This story is told of a master of Trinity College, Cambridge in days long gone by, who hid a paitiality for figs. He held that there was one supremo moment in the exißtence of a fig when it should be oaten, not a minute before or after, and he watched over tiis tig tree with tendt-rness and devotion. It was a mild year, and although the bud had dono his best in the perfecting process, only one tig was the result. Hoping to enjoy his fruit on the morrow, the master wrapped a piece of silver pa-per round it, leaving it labelled, " The' Master's Fig." What a more than foolish thing to do, with a few hundred " umk'igra'ls " about ! The auspicious day dawned, and the ruabter, looking at his -.Yiitch for the iast time, walked conn dpntly to the tree. liut imagine his dismay on finding his precious fruit gone, and on the now empty fwkct the label " A big for the Master."
