President M'Kinley ia despatching 5000 regular troopa from the Pacific Slope to garrison the Philippineß, which America will retain till the end of the war. It iB then proposed to Bell to Britain if the Spaniards do not pay the war indemnity.
The news of the American victory at Manila waa read at the New York theatres between the acts. The audience displayed great enthusiasm. They cheered and sang patriotic songs, ending in aeveral oasea with " God Bave the Queen."
The news of the Spanish defeat at the Pbilippinea caused the greatest excitement in Madrid. Martial law had to be proclaimed to keep the populace in order.
