IN THE FOOT-PRINTS OF ST. PAUL AT CYPRUS
The present writer has visited Cyprus , thr. c tim s, and has been each time more struck with its beauty. Richly coloured and curiously shaped mountains, the highest of which is snow-el .d O'ympus, tower into the sky, which here seems to be always blue. At their foot for miles along tha coast where we landed at Limasol, a plain «-*xtende 1 yellow wifch corn. Just above this crop fche higher lands are planted with o ives, caroub i or locust trees, and occasional palms. If the little town ot' L ; ma.ol existed at all in the time of the Apostles, it no doubt presented much the same appearance to them as it did to us Tbe low flat-roofed hous'-s were built, as now, of thin square bricks made of mud. The streets were very narrow and badly pived ; a raixur^ of races was to be seen in picturesque clothing ; men carrying about skins o f wine and loading them upon unwilling camels and asses ; women spinning at the doors of their hou -les or leadin r about flocks of goats and sheep. It was. however, at Salamis, on the other side of tiie island, thit the Aposfc'es landed. This was then a flour'shing oinmercial town, in which was a famous temple of Jupiter. One of the few runs of the place that still remain is a small portion of an ancient pier, upon which Paul and Barnabas may have stepped ashore. About ihe : r work at Salamis, we are only tod thafc " they continued preaching tbe Word of God in the synagogues of fche Jews." Success among fche Gentiles woul 1 doubt less beg.eatly hin .ered, or even rendered impossible, by the apothe isis of sensuality for which the " purple isla-id" was nofc'd. Traversing the whole island the three missionaries came to Papho*, now the decayed village Baff-i, but th**n a flourishing harbour, and the residence of the Roman Proconsul Sergiu . Paulus, who domiciled that Jewish sorc.rer, BarJesus, whom Paul struck blind as a punishment for his impostures — From The Quiver.
