BALLAD OF OLD SPINSTERS
AN IMITATION,
Once, in our youthful arrogance, We danced and flirted, ruled and laughed ; Now Blew some youth -with killing glanco, Anon the spoony begg»r chaffed ; Then we could wing King Cupid's shaft With tender. woxdß' from lips of rose, And exercise our sex's craft On gallants, cavaliers, and beaux.
Oh, dear old times ! Oh, wasted chance ! With lovers fluttering fore and aft, With picnic, croquet, party, dance, We sped in youth's enchanted craft ! An odorous cigar abaft, Whose fumes our tempers discompose, Will still delighting memories waft Of gallants, cavaliers, and beaux.
But now, in altered circumstances, We seek on doubtful rhymeß to graft Thesa stunted fruits of old romance— Bomance we now regard as daft — We, who a pilot to our raft Had only to select; 'mongst thrso Gay crowds, who o'er our charms waxed salt, Of gallants, cavaliers, and beaux. ENVOY. Maids youthful still, who hold a draft On Cupid's bank, the bargain close ; Or vainly is life's vintage quaffed 'Mid gallants, cavaliers, and beaux. M. A. M.
