LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Thubsday. The Hon. Sir F. Whitaker said that he believed it probable that the occasion for his bill relating to the prevention of an influx of French criminals would be obviated by the action of the New Zealand Government, and he accepted the suggestion of the Colonial Secretary, and moved that the order for the second reading be discharged .—Agreed to. Friday. The Hon. Mr Bathgate moved the motion embodying the lengthy resolutions having for their object the recommendation that the Council advise the Government to take away from the banks the privilege of issuing paper currency and establishing a State bank of issue. He spoke at great length, and used generally the same arguments employed by him last session when he brought in a bill for the establishment of a State bank of issue. There was no debate on tho motion. On division, the voting was — Ayes 11, noes 11.
