BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL

The bi-monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held on Friday. Present — Messrs H. Clark (Chairman), Petrie, Darling, Murray, M'Pherson and M'Kay. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman explained that the meeting had been delayed in the expectation that the auditor would visit the County, but he had not appeared yet, nor was it certain when he would arrive. The accounts were therefore not yet audited. Cr Petrie suggasted that it would be an improvement in the Council's prooedure if the Inspector's report were read at the commencement, instead of the end of the meeting, when there waa often barely a quorum present. The Chairman agreed to adopt the suggestion, and the report and pay-sheet were read as follows : — REPORT. Roads. — The continued wet weather has made several of the district roads very bad, especially on low-lying and level portions. Those on the hills have not suffered so much, and they are fairly passable for this season of the year. The worst portions are in the Coal Gully road, and road towards Kiness, and road down from Lovell's Flat towards Curries, and county road from Inch Clutha, and road Kaitangata towards Sumnerhill. Bridges, — The Lovell's Creek bridge has been replanked since last meeting, and the timber is laid down to replank Dunn's bridge as soon as the surfacemen can overtake the work. None of the other bridges except bridge over North Branch, Tokomairiro river, which received damage by tho late rains, have received any repairs since my last report. Works. — The varioua contracts on hand have been progressing slowly owing to the wet weather. The gravel contract at Waipori is completed, and the metalling at the schoolhouse, Stirling. The metalling near punt, Kaitangata, is not finished owing to the weather keeping the formation too soft to allow it to be spread, and it will have to stand over till the spring. The supply of maintenance metal at Coal Gully and roads at Stirling and Lovell's Flat haa also been finished. Fair progress is being made with formation contracts on road to Dairy Factory, Stirling, new road through Mr Duff's, and road at footbridge over Tokomairiro river near Circle Hill, and on road to Bennett's and Kerr's, Lovell's Flat, and also on road near schoolhouse, Taieri Beach. The works at Quill's cutting, Akatore Creek, are also nearly completed.
