THE DUNEDIN LABOUR MARKET.
Mr Skene reports under date May 19fch as follows : — A slightly better tone in the market. There are fewer unemployed about tows. A great many have taken to the country, and chance it. But there is no need for trained ploughmen, couples, and dairy people taking such a step : for there is a fair demand always for such, although wages are back, through the low price of farm produce. The building trade is more active ; but there is a lot of broken time. Well trained-girls in all departments are wanted. Females are most wanted for hotels at present. Wages : Couples £65 to i-'SO ; shepherds, £60; day labour 6s, 7s and Ss, ; ploughmen, £52 j milkers — boys and girls, 10s to 12s and 15s. men, 20s and 255; cooks, waiters, boots, &c, 20s to 30s and 60s; grooms, gardeuers, and gentlemen's servants, 20s to 303 ; upper class female servants, 20s to 40s; ordinary female servants, 10s, to 12s and 15s; message boys, 5s to 10s.
