(From our own correspondent.) A meeting of the School Committee was held in Mr M'Donald's store, to arrange about their anniversary soiree. It was considered advisable to get it up in the usual manner — that is, by calling upon the ladies in the district to supply the eatables. As there is to be dancing after the concert part, there is little fear but it will be well patronised. It is seldom that any thing 1 of the kind occurs here, and most people like something of the kind to break their usual monotonous life. The money so raised is to go in aid of the sclnoi funds, to pay for the painting 1 ot the school and other improvements in connection with it. The fencing of the ground would be a great improvement to the schoolhouse. The miners in the Kaitangata Coal Company's pit have again resumed work on the same footing- as before, as the directors refused to make any advance. The Redcliff took away 30 tons from the No. 1 Company's pit. This company has let the sinking of a shafo, and the men are actively engaged upon it. Our flax mill is said to stop for the winter at the end of the month, a? Mr Davidson is afraid of the weather breaking, and when long exposed to the weather the flax gets a bad color, and spoils the sale greatly.
