A Russian Hero.

After General Stoessel, Nikolai Suyeff, aged 13, is tbe hero. of Port Arthur. According to the Russian Press, Suyeff has pierced the Japanese lines, carryingdespatches to General Kuropatkin, do lees than four times. Suyeff is a lad of good education, the son of an engineer,, and grandson of an English lady named Graves. During his third journey he was aaptured by the Japanese, who spared him a spy's death owing to his youth. On the night following his capture he shot his guard, mounted upon a cavalry horse, and made a dash for freedom. At three in the morning he rode up to the outworks of Palich-

wan with a Jap bullet through bi s shoulder. SuyefPs method of escaping capture was to hide himself by day, and crawl through the investing lines by night. His first exploit was to walk from Port Arthur to Tashi chau, then in Russian hands, passing Japanese troops no less than 1 1 times. On another occasion he acted as spy, penetrating tbe Japanese lines, and bringing back the breech-block of a gun as proof that he had done so. Kuropatkin has decorated the boy despatchrider with tbe Order of St. George ; and Stossel has speoially reported his services to the Czar.
