The wind varied from 12 to 8 knots, ultimately falling to a calm three miles from home. The Shamrock received 6 3-10th tec lead at the outset, but the Columbia overhauled her, passing the stake boat first. Superior handling replaced the Shamrock in front. Sir Thomas Lipton is hopeful of success, as the Shamrock's light weather qualities surprised everyone.
