THE JAMESON RAID.
She following letter from Sergt.Major Dewar, drill instructor of the volunteers in this district, appeared in Tuesday's Napier Telegraph :— Sir,— Will you kindly allow me to correct a statement in to-night's. issue of your paper regarding tbe number of men composing the force in. the J&tiaeftnf raid, having myself been one of the number- When we left Buluwayoon the 20th October, 1895, there were 350 of tbe Matabeleland and Mashonaland Mounted Police. On reaching Pitsain, three miles from the Transvaal border, on the 2nd December, after a march of 500 miles, we enrolled 80 recruits. On the morning of the 30th December, 100 Bechuanaland Mounted Polico from Mafeking joined us at Malmaine, so we numbered in all not more than 530.— 1 am, etc., A. K. J. Dewar, Staff Sergeant-Major. The following paragraph, which ia vouched for by an authority, has been supplied to the LytteltoD Times for publication :— A Dumber of the prisoners in Lyttelton gaol are desirous of offering their services for the Transvaal. The local autherities have no power to deal *vitu a matter of this kind, but it is probable that the application will be forwarded to the Minister of Justice.
