THEFT BY TRICK
WOMAN LOSES £4
INCIDENT IN CITY SHOP
A cheeky theft by "ringing the changes" was committed by a Maori in a city dairy last night, the victim being a woman who is to-day poorer by £4.
Two Maoris entered the dairy at 7 p.m., and one asked the woman if she could change a £5 note.
Going to the till, the shopkeeper procured five single notes, which she placed on the counter. Meanwhile the Maori went through the actions of producing the fiver, but failed to do so. While still fumbling about his pockets he asked the women if she could give him a pound's worth of silver. The unsuspecting shopkeeper thereupon picked up one of the five £1 notes from the counter and went to the till to change it. Immediately she had turned her back on them the two men grabbed the £4 and disappeared.
It was not a new trick, but one that has not been worked in Auckland for some time. Its success should serve as a warning to other shopkeepers.
