DEVONPORT SHIELD

UNIVERSITY'S LOST CHANCES

As a result of the second series of matches in the Devonport Shield hockey competition, which were decided at Papatoetoe on Saturday, Somerville and Owai Rovers share the 1 sad in the B section, and United holds a one-point advantage in the A section. The Somerville —Air Force Central game produced occasional glimpses of brilliant hockey, but the expectations of a close game failed to materialise when the Air Force defence- seemed to lose its grip on the game early in the second spell. Somerville forwards made the most of their chances by scoring three goals in quick succession. The final score was s—l in Somerville's favour. The Grammar Old Boys team was very lucky to leave the field with the honours even against University (1 —1), for had the University turned to account the numerous opportunities they were offered in the second spell there would have been a decisive margin in the scores. Managing to hold the fast-raiding Owai Rovers line until its two full-backs had to leave the field owing to injuries received in a collision, Mt. Eden was finally beaten by 4 goals to nil. St. Luke's outplayed the Navy to win 4—2. and Training College put up a similar performance against the Ardmore eleven. United had a win over Whenuapai by default.. Rep Team Chosen Mr. W. Newsham has announced his final selection of the Auckland team to meet Canterbury in the match next Saturday for the New Zealand Challenge Shield. It is as follows: Goal, R. Jenkins (Mt. Eden); Backs: P. Roberts (University), D. McLennan (St. Luke's). Halves: K. Lawry (Grammar Old Boys), L. Watson (Air Force Central), D. Chatfield (Owai Rovers). Forwards: R. Bedggood (Training College), N. Stevens (Somerville), R. Roughton (Grammar Old Bovs), L. Wyatt (Rodney). A. Ritchie (Owai Rovers). Reserves: Goal, W. Lascelles (University). Back, J. Bellingham (Franklin). Half, L. Crawley (Air Force Central). Forwards, D. Marshall (Mt. Eden), H. Cooper (University).
