CITATION TO AWARD
WAIHI SQUADRON-LEADER P.A. WELLINGTON, Thursday. The citation to the , award of a bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross won by acting Squadron-Leader J. R. Cullen, D.F.C., son of Mr. G. R. Cullen, of Whangamata Road, Waihi, has now been received at the Air Department from the Air Ministry, London. "Acting Squadron-Leader Cullen has participated in very many sorties since he was awarded the D.F.C.," says the citation. "He is cited as having consistently displayed the highest standard'of skill and courage, setting a fine example." D tailing one instance of his successful leadership, the citation states: "In April, 1945, he led a squadron in an attack against enemy shipping at Ems. Considerable antiaircraft fire was encountered from various ships and batteries on shore. In spite of this, the attack was well pressed home, acting SquadronLeader Cullen obtaining hits on a medium - sized merchantman. The skill and daring shown by him contributed materially' to the success achieved."
