WINTER CUP TRIAL
ROYAL FLIGHT IMPRESSIVE (Special.) TIMARU, this day. Royal Flight recorded an attractive Winter Cup trial in the Claremont Handicap at the South Canterbury and Christchurch Hunt Clubs' meetings at Washdyke on Saturday. The Salmagundi filly took the lead as soon as the field straightened up for the run home and won very easily by a clear margin. Ganges did well to get up lor second place, while Alpine (bracketed with Royal Flight) came come even more strongly for third. It was a smart performance on the part of Royal Flight, which will come more into favour for the Winter Cup. High Ideal, Lord Advocate, High Play, Gulf Stream and Royal Flight did best at the start, but at the end of two furlongs, High Ideal had been joined by Gulf Stream, this pair racing clear of High Play, Royal Flight and Lord Advocate, while two lengths back came Alpine, which was clear of Ganges, with Platform at the head of the others. High Ideal dropped out racing round the home turn, where High Play also started to drift. Gulf Stream was closely attended to the straight by Royal Flight and Lord Advocate, with Ganges and Alpine making up ground, but Royal Flight then shot to the front and hever looked like being caught, while Ganges wore down and passed Lord Advocate and Gulf Stream.
