POLLING HEAVY IN IST ELECTORATES
Over 75 Per Cent Of Votes Cast In Many Districts N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. 1 p.m. LONDON, July 26. Reports from all over the United Kingdom indicate that announcements of election results were followed by voters with exceptionally keen interest. The volume of voting was consistently heavy and in many electorates more than 75 per cent of the available votes were cast. Included in the results are the following:— Lambeth, Norwood Division.—R. Chamberlain (Lab.), 16,667; D. Sandys (Con.), 14,644; Lieut-Colonel A. D. Wintle (Lib.), 3944. Conservative majority in 1935, 12,456. Clapham. — J. R. Batley (Lab.), 15,205; Captain H. L. Lowndes (Con., formerly of New Zealand), 10,014. Conservative majority in 1935, 6090. Leicester, West Division.—B. Jenner (Lab.), 20,563; H. G. Nicolson (Nat., sitting member), 13,348; J. H. Kirby (Lib.), 4639. Labour Nationalist majority in 1935, 87. Northumberland, Berwick - on - Tweed Division.—Lieut-Colonel R. A. Thorpe (Con.), 12,315; Sir William Beveridge (Lib., sitting member), 10,353; J. Davis (Lab.), 5782. Lieut. G. C. Grey (Lib.) unopposed in byelection, 1941. Middlesex, Uxbridge Division.— Flight-Lieutenant F. Beswick (Lab.), 25,190; Colonel J. J. Llewellin (Con., sitting member), 24,106; J. L. Aylett (Lib.), 8300. Conservative majority in 1935, 10,737. Derby, South Division.— A. J. Champion (Lab.), 47,586; P. V. Emrys-Evans (Con., sitting member), 24,636; W. Heathcote (Lib.), 10,255. Labour majority in 1936 by-election, 2753. Norwich (two members).—Lady Noel Buxton (Lab.), 31,553; J. Paton (Lab.), 31,229; Sir Geoffrey Shakespeare (Lib. Nat.'). 25.945; H. G. I Strauss (Con.), 24,225. (Both the latter were sitting members). National Liberal majority in 1935, 11,309; Conservative, 12,127. Chester, Crewe Division. — S. Schoiafield-Allen (Lab.), 28,416; Sir Donald Sommerville (Con., sitting j member), 18,468. Conservative majority 1935. 1109. Lancashire, Ormskirk Division.— W. Wilson (Lab.), 30,126; A. C. Grey (Con.), 23,104; Commander S. KingHall (Ind. Nat, sitting member), 11,848. Elected unopposed in 1939. Leith.— J. Hoy (Lab.), 19,571; Ernest Brown (Lib. Nat, sitting member), 10,116; J. Cormack (Prot. Act.), 2493.
