AVONDALE CLUB'S ANNUAL The annual meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club will be held at Haynes' Hall, Hobson Street, at 3 p.m. to-morrow. HAS THE j ABILITY The unnamed gelding by Lurina from Lady Leslie in R. G. Stenning's stable is showing a fair amount of promise in his schooling tasks at, Ellerslie. He is a powerfully built gelding, but is still on the "green" side, and will take a bit of time to become seasoned. IS SHAPING WELL On several occasions within the last month Yama has been speeded up over half a mile, and his efforts have been quite satisfactory. During the season Yama contested five races without earning any stake money, but he is well forward and may do better during the spring meetings. BRED THE RIGHT WAY The rising three-year-old. Swift Tide, has wintered well and has developed into a solid-looking filly. During the season Swift Tide was only started on two occasions, and in her final outing she displayed promise by running third to Good Company and Tilting in the Putaruru Stakes at the Matamata meeting last February. When properly seasoned the daughter of Tiderace and Talari should not be hard to place to advantage, for she is bred on sound lines. BROTHER TO SALUTATION The rising three-year-old Ceremonious, bv Theio from Queen's Salute, a fullbrother to Salutation and the Trentham winner Grey Salute, is highly regarded by a Hastings', scribe, who says he may be the best galloper trained at Hastings since the days of The Hawk. Ceremonious was bred at the .Flaxmere Stud and was bought as a yearling by Mr. W. H.~Gaisford, Oringi, at the 1944 sales, for 800gs, Ceremonious has not yet raced, and only recently began to work along fast. FIRST HURDLE WINNER Shepherd's Mate showed solid form as a hurdler at Wellington and his prospects of maintaining the form appear good. He is a young horse which is capable in soft going, and does not lack stamina. He is a five-year-old by Greek Shepherd (a classic winner by Iliad) from Uturiri by Sinking Fund front Angry Words by Lucullus from Altercation by Provocation. Shepherd's Mate is a half-brother to Paid, and his dam is a half-sister to Black Beret, Scram and Panoni. GOOD FOR A HACK For a hack hurdler Ballyneety ran an excellent race to finish fourth in t.ie Winter Hurdles against strong opposition. He was a good way out of his ground a round from home, and was taken up quickly to get on terms with the leaders. The Dude interfered with him just after they jumped the second to last fence, and he went back a few lengths. Ballyneety is a sound stayer and gallops well in the heaviest of going. His Wellington form suggests that he may not be long in winning a race.
