NEW PRESIDENT

AUCKLAND RED CROSS MAJOR-GENERAL BELL ELECTED A new president, Major-General P. H. Bell, was elected at the annual meeting of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society last night. The retiring president, Mr. A. P. Postlewaite, was defeated, as was the retiring chairman, Mr. K. C. Aekms, who was replaced by the former treasurer, Mr. A. K. Fenwick.

Mr. Postlewaite and Mr. Aekins were nominated for the executive, but both declined to take office. Sir Ernest Davis, one of the vice-presi-dents, who conducted the meeting, said it would be a great pity if their services were lost to the Red Cross, and Major-General Bell then nominated them as vice-presidents, and the nominations were carried.

Another feature of the elections was the addition of four women to the vice-presidents. It was pointed out by a woman delegate that there were no women among 1 Ihe vice-pre-sidents standing, and as women played such a large part in Red Cross work it was considered that they should be represented. Mrs. A. M. Ferguson, Mrs." C. W. Knight, Mrs. P. J. North and Mrs. J. A. East were accordingly elected.

Other officers were elected as follows: — Vice-presidents, Archbishop Averill, Bishop Simkin, Bishop Liston, the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, Sir Ernest Davis, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Canon R. G. Coats, Mr. G. T. Paterson; hon. treasurer, appointment deferred; hon. legal adviser, Mr. M: G. McArthur; auditor, Mr. R. W. Lock; executive committee, Messrs. F. V. Home, H. Scott, Mesdames A. M. Ferguson, J. A. East, C. Lobb, H. Cadness, E. Frost and N. Carnachan.
