LABOUR FOR WHARVES
O.C. WHANGAREI, Thursday. Unless the assistance of Harbour Board employees in loading and unloading vessels at the town wharf was maintained the Northern Steamship Company would be compelled to cease the operation of the Whangarei service, the Harbour Board was informed to-day.
The handling of cargo so that ships could sail on the tide and secure full cargoes of cement was essential to meet the extremely high working costs. The Government had been advised of the position and it was hoped that some assistance would be given coastal companies. In the meantime labour from the board's employees was still essential if the service was to continue.
The board received the letter.
