RETURNED MAORI'S FATE P.A. GISBORNE, this day. Mr. Charles Chambers, aged 38, a labourer, is believed to have been drowned on Saturday morning when he was washed 'down the swollen Awatere River on the East Coast while attempting to ford it on hoi*seback. The horse and rider were last seen struggling in the water some distance from the shore, which the animal managed to regain. Mr. Chambers served in the Maori Battalion in Greece and Crete.
