WORK ON TUNNEL
"NOT FOR SOME TIME , '
It is unlikely that work on the Mornmgside tunnel scheme and the duplication of the north line will be undertaken for some time. Advice +£ tni s effect has been received from the Minister of Railways, Mr. bemple, by the Swanson-Ranui Ratepayers, Association. Though the tunnel scheme had be en included as part of the post-war rehabilitation programme, the beginning of work on any major project was governed by many factors, chief °f which was the availability of suitable manpower and material, said the Minister in the letter received by the association. Under existing conditions it was not possible to determine the date at- which the work could be undertaken.
The Minister gave an assurance to the association that its representations would not be overlooked when priority for the many urgent works the Government had under consideration was being decided.
